Modern society has grown through stages of technology development that has brought many positive and some negative impacts.  The course of these developments has led developed economies from labor intensive occupations to a highly information, entertainment and relationships based society. From fundamental industries such  as agriculture and manufacturing to service and entertainment industries, the means of accomplishing work and seeking self-satisfaction has become centered around automation, information and communications.

Our cities have grown up organically from central hubs of manufacture which drew in rural workers to do manual labor to centers for congregation of information workers, most who commute from the sprawling suburbs.

The  automobile has matured into a central focus for economic activity, persona, and organization of society. Even though the effects of pollution have been understood to be harmful, it is only in recent years that the consensus of the world's scientists have raised ominous flags of concern that our addiction to the automobile and other consumption habits that drive the use and discarding of the products of fossil fuels threatens the economic fiber and well being of the entire society.
